France has recently established a new company to further design, develop, and produce lithium-ion batteries with lower cost, longer life, and faster charging speed than currently widely used lithium batteries. It is expected that industrial production will start from 2020.
It is understood that this technology startup company named Tiamat is the winner of the 2017 “i-Lab†Innovation Laboratory National Competition in France. Its R&D project is based on the world's first prototype of an 18650 sodium-ion battery that meets industry standards. The 18650 battery has a cylindrical shape, a height of 65 mm, and a cross-sectional diameter of 18 mm. Lithium-ion batteries are currently widely used in notebook computers, LED flashlights, and electric vehicles.
Currently, the company already has dozens of prototypes of 18650 sodium-ion batteries, and will continue to improve its performance in the future to better meet the requirements for charging speed and endurance of electric vehicle batteries. The company plans to officially start production from 2020.
Sodium-ion batteries are similar to lithium batteries in that they have the greatest advantages in terms of abundant raw material reserves, low prices, and better safety, especially for storage and air transportation. Sodium-ion battery research began around the 1980s. In November 2015, the French scientific research team announced that it has taken the lead to achieve an important breakthrough in the development of rechargeable sodium-ion battery materials.
According to the data provided by the French National Science Research Center, the team designed 18650 sodium-ion batteries with an energy density of 90 watt-hours per kilogram, which is equivalent to the early lithium-ion batteries, and the working life is much higher than that of existing lithium-ion batteries, achieving 2,000 times.
