Solid-state battery breakthrough may double the density of lithium-ion batteries

Researchers Fangfang Chen and Xiaoen Wang of Deakin University in Australia report that they use industrial polymers to create solid electrolytes. Lithium ion batteries are expected to double in density without exploding or catching fire due to overheating. The new technology uses a solid polymer material that is weakly combined with a lithium ion battery to replace the current volatile liquid solvent used by the battery as an electrolyte.

Liquid electrolyte is one of the reasons why batteries are easy to catch fire. Dr. Chen said that if the battery industry can realize their discovery, electronic devices that use batteries in the future can be carried on the plane and safely placed in the suitcase.

The research report was published in the journal "Trends in Chemistry".
