UK Develops Nutritional Supplements to Relieve Elderly Blindness

British researchers recently reported that they have developed a new nutritional supplement that can effectively alleviate age-related macular degeneration, a common disease that causes blindness in the elderly.

The press communique released on the 19th by Queen's University Belfast in the United Kingdom stated that after five years of research, experts from the University’s Visual Science Center developed a nutritional supplement called CARMA that can effectively alleviate the symptoms of age-related macular degeneration. The main components of supplements are carotenoids, vitamin C, E, and zinc.

Studies have shown that in patients with early symptoms of age-related macular degeneration, after taking this nutritional supplement, the course of the disease is significantly slowed down, allowing older patients to maintain vision for a longer period of time.

Age-related macular degeneration is common in elderly people over the age of 60 and is one of the major causes of irreversible blindness in the elderly. It is caused by the degeneration of the macular area in the retina, which often manifests as decreased visual acuity in the early stage, and loss of central vision (dark spots in the center of the visual field) as well as blurred vision and severe blindness in the late stage.

Previously, some experts believe that in the daily diet, it is helpful to prevent age-related macular degeneration by supplementing carotenoids with vegetables such as spinach, celery, and cucumber.
