Switzerland has developed SD card-size perovskite solar cells with efficiency exceeding 20%

EPFL trial-produced high-efficiency perovskite solar cells

The EPFL announced on June 9, 2016 that a perovskite solar cell with a cell size of SD card has been prototyped using a combination of coating process and simple vacuum process. The cell conversion efficiency exceeds 20 %. Related results have been published in the academic journal Science.

The perovskite solar cell with the highest unit conversion efficiency is a unit developed by Korea Research Institute of Chemicals (KRICT) and Ulsan University of Science and Technology (UNIST) in Korea. The efficiency is 22.1%, but the cell area is very small, only 0.1cm2. This is the first time that more than 20% of cell conversion efficiency has been achieved with a larger cell size (SD card size).

The team that developed the unit was a research team led by Michael Graetzel, professor of photochemistry and interface chemistry at the EPFL, who is well-known for the development of dye-sensitized solar cells. Goetzel et al. first applied a perovskite ink (Video YouTube) as a light absorbing layer on a glass substrate using a spin coating technique. Then, a process called "Vacuum Flash" is used to crystallize the ink while vacuuming. According to EPFL, this method can remove excess components and promote the formation of seed crystals to achieve crystallization. Finally, high-quality perovskite crystals were successfully obtained.

Also intend to achieve more than 30% conversion efficiency

Gretzel predicts that the conversion efficiency will be more than 30% through the use of a tandem structure combining a perovskite solar cell and an existing silicon solar cell. According to him, the theoretical efficiency of this solar cell is as high as 44%. (Reporter: Nozawa Tetsuo)
